Encourage Without Adding Pressure.

Use specific observations and give your athlete room to own the game.

Legacy North editorial draft · October 2026

Notice an Action They Control

Replace a broad judgement such as “You were the best” with something you actually saw: returning to defence, asking a question or encouraging a teammate. Specific feedback shows that effort, decisions and relationships matter alongside the result.

Ask Before Advising

Try “Would you like me to listen, help you think it through, or give you some space?” A young person who is disappointed may need time before a technical discussion. Their answer can change later.

Leave the Next Goal with Them

Offer two manageable options if they are stuck, then let them choose. A goal could be learning a teammate’s name or trying one coached cue. Avoid adding extra practice as punishment for a result. Revisit whether the goal still feels useful at the end of the week.
