Give Feedback That Leaves a Next Action.

Keep instruction specific, brief and connected to the athlete’s attempt.

Legacy North editorial draft · October 2026

Describe, Then Guide

Start with what happened: “You received the ball with your back to the open space.” Add one cue: “Check over your shoulder before the pass arrives.” This gives the athlete information without turning the moment into a judgement about character.

Check Understanding

Ask the athlete to explain or demonstrate the cue. Use a different example if the first explanation did not land. Allow another attempt before adding a second correction.

Recognise the Change

Notice when the athlete tries the adjustment, even if the outcome is imperfect. Ask what they felt or saw. Over time, help them recognise the cue themselves so your voice is not required on every repetition.

Make It Useful.

Write your own next step. These notes stay in this page and are not saved or sent; print before leaving if you want to keep them.
