Your first session, without the guesswork.
Your First Session, Without the Guesswork.
A practical checklist to help a young athlete feel prepared.
A new gym can feel unfamiliar even when an athlete loves basketball. A little preparation can make the first visit easier.
Before You Go
- Confirm the session date, start time, location, age group and pickup arrangements.
- Ask which registration steps or guardian waivers must be completed first.
- Check what equipment is needed. Bring a labelled water bottle and clothing suitable for activity.
- Ask about anything that would help the athlete take part comfortably. Share relevant information directly with the program team.
Choose One Small Goal
Keep the first-session goal within the athlete’s control. It could be introducing themselves to a coach, learning one teammate’s name, or trying a drill that is new to them.
There is no need to turn the first visit into a test of how good they are. It is also a chance to discover whether the environment feels welcoming and appropriate.
After the Session
Give them time to settle, then ask what they enjoyed, what felt unfamiliar and whether they would like to return. Listen before suggesting what they should do differently.
If a practical concern came up, such as not understanding instructions or not knowing where to go, ask the coach about it before the next session.
