Address a Conflict of Interest Early
A real or perceived conflict can undermine trust even when people believe they are acting fairly. Use the organization's process to make relevant relationships and decision boundaries visible.
When to use it
Use this when someone involved in a decision has a personal, family or financial connection to an option.
Put It into Practice
- Ask the person to disclose the relevant connection through the established governance route, sharing only the information needed by those responsible for the decision.
- Have the authorized lead determine the appropriate participation limits, review or independent decision process under the organization's policy, rather than improvising a private exception.
- Record the handling and final decision proportionately, making sure the reasons are supportable without exposing unrelated personal information.
What It Can Look Like
A leader whose relative offers a service declares the connection and steps back from the selection process as directed by the organization's policy.

Take it with you: Early disclosure creates room for fair handling; it does not by itself prove wrongdoing or replace the organization's required process.
