A better conversation with your coach.
A Better Conversation with Your Coach.
Prepare a calm, specific conversation about your athlete’s experience.
Legacy North editorial draft · October 2026
Start with One Observable Situation
Choose a moment you can describe without guessing intentions: “My child is unsure what to practice between sessions.” Avoid turning a single conversation into a review of the entire season. Ask your athlete what they want help understanding before you contact the coach.
Ask for a Useful Next Step
Request a suitable time away from the court. Try: “Could you help us understand one thing to work on and how we will know it is improving?” Listen to the answer, then repeat the agreed action in your own words. A clear action is more useful than a promise about playing time.
Close the Loop
Agree when to check back. Keep the follow-up focused on the plan and your athlete’s experience. If the concern involves safety, harassment or inappropriate behaviour, report it promptly through the organization’s safeguarding route rather than treating it as a routine coaching disagreement.
Make It Useful.
Write your own next step. These notes stay in this page and are not saved or sent; print before leaving if you want to keep them.
