Make Coaching Observable and Interruptible.

Use the Rule of Two as part of a wider safeguarding approach.

Legacy North editorial draft · October 2026

Plan the Setting

The Coaching Association of Canada’s Rule of Two aims for two responsible adults to be present with a participant. Plan spaces and interactions so they can be observed and interrupted; avoid isolated one-to-one situations.

Apply the Idea Beyond the Gym

Discuss communications, travel, changing areas, individual feedback and online sessions in the organization’s safeguarding policy. Do not improvise exceptions silently. Follow the approved procedure and report a concern through the designated route.

Keep Responsibility with Adults

A teammate is not a replacement for an adult supervisor. Before a session, confirm staffing and the backup plan. If the safe supervision plan cannot be met, escalate to the organizer before continuing.
