Choose a Cue Before the Whistle
Give your attention one useful place to go when play begins.
When to use it
Use this when you arrive with too many things you want to fix.
Put It into Practice
- Choose one action you can actually do in the opening minutes: communicate a name, show a passing target or get organized on defence.
- Turn that action into two or three words. Say the cue once during the warm-up and connect it to the situation where you need it.
- After the first segment, ask whether you used the cue. Keep it if it helped; simplify it if it competed with the coach’s instructions.
What It Can Look Like
“Show hands” reminds a player to give a teammate a clear passing target.

Take it with you: A cue guides an action. It is not a promise that every play will go well.
