Give Athletes a Choice with Real Boundaries

Athlete choice works best when the options are meaningful and both fit the session. An open-ended vote can create confusion if some suggestions cannot be used. Set the boundaries first, then follow through on the choice you offer.

When to use it

Use when athletes need ownership of an activity, practice finish or team routine.

Put It into Practice

  1. Choose two options that meet the same learning goal and fit the available time, space and supervision. Explain what is fixed and what athletes can decide.
  2. Let everyone respond through a quick vote, partner discussion or private suggestion. Avoid allowing the loudest athlete to decide for the whole group.
  3. Run the chosen option and ask what helped their learning. Tell athletes when the other option could be tried, without promising something you cannot schedule.

What It Can Look Like

The coach sets a ten-minute spacing block; athletes choose which of two game formats they want to use.
