Run a Two-Minute Athlete-Led Huddle

Leadership can be practiced in small, supported moments. A short athlete-led huddle lets players organise their thinking without needing a polished speech. Rotate the opportunity and offer preparation so the role does not always fall to the most confident voice.

When to use it

Use between practice games or near the end of a session.

Put It into Practice

  1. Give the athlete a simple structure in advance: name one useful team action, ask one question and choose one focus for the next round.
  2. Let them prepare with a partner and decide whether they want to lead alone or together. Keep the huddle brief and remain responsible for safety and respectful participation.
  3. Afterward, ask the athlete what was comfortable and what support would help next time. Recognise the clarity of their contribution rather than comparing their leadership with others.

What It Can Look Like

Two athletes lead a huddle about calling for the ball, hear one teammate's idea and agree to test it.
