Plan a Fair Partner Rotation

Repeated self-selection can leave the same athlete waiting to be chosen. A planned rotation removes that public moment while helping athletes work with different teammates. Keep flexibility for access needs and respectful interpersonal boundaries.

When to use it

Use in partner-based practice or when cliques limit participation.

Put It into Practice

  1. Prepare a simple rotation using court positions, numbered stations or coach-assigned pairs. Explain how everyone moves before starting and avoid choosing captains to select people publicly.
  2. Observe whether partnerships are useful and respectful. Adjust for size, task demands, access needs or conflict without explaining personal information to the whole group.
  3. Ask athletes what helped communication with a new partner. Keep successful rotation patterns and change pairings that prevent safe or meaningful participation.

What It Can Look Like

Athletes rotate one station after each passing round, so nobody has to search for a willing partner while everyone watches.
