Use a Three-Level Challenge Menu

Different experience levels do not require separate labels or permanent ability groups. Offer three versions of the same task and let athletes move between them. The goal is a workable challenge, not proving which level someone belongs on.

When to use it

Use during skill practice when one version is too easy for some athletes and too difficult for others.

Put It into Practice

  1. Keep the learning target shared and change one condition: distance, defender pressure or available space. Name the options by their task rather than beginner and advanced.
  2. Demonstrate each option and explain how to switch. Invite athletes to choose a version where they can attempt the skill with attention and some success.
  3. Watch choices without making a public ranking. Ask individuals what they noticed and suggest a different condition when the task becomes automatic or frustrating.

What It Can Look Like

All players practice accurate passing: close target, moving target or a target with a passive defender.

Take it with you: Make challenge adjustable without turning the adjustment into an identity.
