Plan for Three Basketballs and Twelve Athletes

Limited equipment should change the organisation of practice, not become a reason to leave athletes watching. Use partner and small-group roles that connect directly to the day's skill. Check that each role rotates often enough to remain meaningful.

When to use it

Use when equipment is shared, deliveries are delayed or a community gym has few basketballs.

Put It into Practice

  1. Create three groups of four. Give each group one ball and a task with roles for passer, receiver, movement partner and observer.
  2. Make the observer's job narrow, such as noticing whether the receiver showed a target. Rotate roles after a short set so every athlete handles the ball.
  3. Finish with small-sided play and rotate which group uses the available basket. Ask athletes which non-ball role helped them understand the next attempt.

What It Can Look Like

In a passing activity, the movement partner creates a safe passing lane while the observer checks timing, then all four exchange jobs.
