Plan for Uneven Attendance
A practice designed for exactly twelve athletes can unravel when only seven arrive. Prepare formats that scale without making absences the centre of the session. The athletes who attend should still receive a purposeful and welcoming experience.
When to use it
Use when attendance changes with transport, seasonal work or overlapping activities.
Put It into Practice
- Write a minimum, expected and larger-group format beside the main activity. Keep the learning target consistent and change group size, space or rotation instead.
- Choose a neutral-player role where appropriate so uneven numbers do not leave someone repeatedly waiting. Rotate that role and explain its learning value.
- Record which format worked with the group you actually had. Share practical attendance barriers with program organisers through normal channels rather than criticising absent athletes.
What It Can Look Like
Seven athletes play three-on-three with a rotating support passer who helps the team in possession, within a clearly marked area.

Take it with you: Plan for real attendance instead of an ideal headcount.
