Design a Volunteer'S First Shift

A good first shift gives a newcomer a manageable task and a named source of help. Orientation should make responsibilities and boundaries concrete before participants arrive.

When to use it

Use this when a new approved volunteer is ready to begin work.

Put It into Practice

  1. Confirm any required screening and orientation are complete, then send arrival details, the specific task and the supervising contact before the shift.
  2. Walk through the relevant venue areas, reporting routes and role limits; explain which decisions require an adult staff member or authorized lead.
  3. Pair the volunteer with an appropriate experienced person and close with a short check-in, recording one improvement for the next newcomer.

What It Can Look Like

A welcome-desk volunteer practices checking names with the coordinator and knows that pickup changes and sensitive family questions must go to designated staff.

Take it with you: A first shift should build confidence through supported action while keeping responsibility for safety and supervision with the organization.
