Give a Youth Advisory Group a Real Decision
Young people can quickly tell when consultation has no effect. Offer a decision with genuine room to influence it and explain the boundaries before asking for ideas.
When to use it
Use this when inviting athletes to advise on a program or event.
Put It into Practice
- Choose a specific decision within an approved budget and safeguarding framework, and state which parts are fixed, open or outside the group's authority.
- Invite participation through several accessible routes, including quieter or written contributions, without making the most confident athletes the default representatives.
- Document what the group recommends, explain the final decision and show what changed; acknowledge suggestions that could not be adopted and why.
What It Can Look Like
Athletes choose among feasible warm-up welcome formats after staff explain time and safety requirements, and the selected routine is tried at the next session.
