Prepare the Next Person to Lead
Succession is easier when knowledge is shared before someone leaves. Build a supported learning path for one responsibility while keeping authority and sensitive access clearly defined.
When to use it
Use this when a role depends heavily on one experienced leader or an upcoming transition is known.
Put It into Practice
- Identify the decisions, relationships and routines most important to the role, then select one responsibility suitable for gradual transfer to an approved person.
- Arrange observation, supervised practice and feedback, granting only the access needed for the current stage and following screening or authorization requirements.
- Set a readiness check and explicit transfer date, documenting what remains with the outgoing leader and who supports the new person afterward.
What It Can Look Like
An assistant first observes venue coordination, then manages one booking discussion with support before taking ownership at the next scheduled transition.
Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.
Take it with you: A succession plan builds capability through supported responsibility rather than assuming that a folder of documents is enough preparation.
