Make a Realistic Travel Budget

Calculate the whole cost of participation so a low registration fee does not hide an unaffordable season. A useful budget includes time as well as money.

When to use it

Use this while comparing programs, especially when sessions or tournaments require travel from a smaller community.

Put It into Practice

  1. Create columns for fees, fuel, meals, accommodation, equipment and lost work time; label every unknown instead of entering an optimistic zero.
  2. Ask the organizer which events are optional, when payments are due and whether confidential assistance or equipment lending is available.
  3. Choose a household limit and a fallback plan before committing; discuss options privately without making your athlete responsible for adult finances.

What It Can Look Like

A nearby weekly program costs more per session but needs no overnight travel; the family compares total season costs before deciding.

Take it with you: An affordable plan is one your household can sustain without repeatedly renegotiating essentials or asking a child to solve the budget.
