Support a Return After Time Away

Returning after an absence can feel socially awkward even when an athlete wants to come back. Make the re-entry predictable while leaving personal explanations under their control.

When to use it

Use this after a family absence, a program break or another period away from the group.

Put It into Practice

  1. Ask the athlete what they want others to know and which part of returning worries them; do not promise details will remain private beyond safety requirements.
  2. Contact the coach about practical re-entry arrangements and any approved participation limits, sharing only what staff need to support the return.
  3. Agree on a simple arrival plan and a check-in afterward; let the athlete decide whether they want a familiar person beside them at the start.

What It Can Look Like

An athlete meets the coach at the entrance and joins a familiar partner activity; the group is told only that they are welcome back.

Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.

Take it with you: Returning should not require a public explanation, and any health-related participation decisions belong with the appropriate qualified professionals and program process.
