Be Ready When You Are Not on the Floor
Contribute from the sideline while staying connected to the game.
When to use it
Use when you are a substitute or waiting for your turn in a run.
Put It into Practice
- Ask the coach what you should watch or prepare for. Follow the team’s expectations and any warm-up instructions rather than creating your own conditioning challenge.
- Notice one relevant pattern, such as spacing or a repeated team instruction. Support teammates without coaching over the coach or criticizing officials.
- When called, clarify your role if needed. After the game, ask a development question at the appropriate time instead of judging your whole worth by minutes played.
What It Can Look Like
A substitute listens to the timeout instructions and knows the assignment when entering.

Take it with you: Being engaged is a contribution. It does not require hiding disappointment.
