Disagree Without Excluding Someone

Handle a basketball disagreement while keeping respect intact.

When to use it

Use after a disputed call, missed rotation or difference of opinion.

Put It into Practice

  1. Describe the specific moment without insults or guesses about someone’s motives. If emotions are high, ask for a pause before discussing it.
  2. Let the other person describe what they saw. Identify the rule, instruction or shared expectation you need clarified by the coach.
  3. Agree on what happens next in play. Do not turn the disagreement into a group chat campaign or leave someone out of the next activity as punishment.

What It Can Look Like

Two players ask the coach about a switching call rather than recruiting teammates to take sides.

Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.

Take it with you: You do not have to agree about every play to treat each other as teammates.
