Practice One Read, Not Just a Move

Connect a skill to the decision that gives it a purpose.

When to use it

Use when a move works alone but is hard to use in a game.

Put It into Practice

  1. Ask your coach what you should notice before using the skill: a defender’s position, available space or a teammate’s movement. Choose one cue.
  2. Practice with a partner giving two simple options at a manageable pace. Respond to the cue rather than deciding your move before the repetition starts.
  3. Pause after a few attempts. Describe what you saw and what you chose. Adjust the task with your coach if you are guessing rather than reading.

What It Can Look Like

In a passing activity, the receiver changes position and the passer adjusts the target instead of repeating one memorized pass.

Take it with you: A useful repetition develops attention and choice as well as technique.
