Replace a Label with a Description
Make your self-talk specific enough to act on.
When to use it
Use when you catch yourself saying “I always fail” or “I’m useless.”
Put It into Practice
- Notice the label without turning that thought into another reason to criticize yourself. Write down what actually happened in one possession or activity.
- Separate the event from your identity. Replace “I am terrible” with a description such as “I rushed that pass before checking the space.”
- Choose a next action and ask for coaching if you need it. If harsh thoughts keep affecting your daily life, tell a trusted adult rather than managing them alone.
What It Can Look Like
“I missed three attempts” leaves room to learn; “I am a failure” gives you no next step.
Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.
Take it with you: An accurate description is more useful than either an insult or forced positivity.
