Audit the Minutes Athletes Spend Waiting
A busy-looking practice can still leave athletes standing in long lines. Measure waiting before adding another drill. This quick audit helps you use the court, balls and adults you already have more effectively.
When to use it
Use when a session feels flat or athletes keep drifting out of an activity.
Put It into Practice
- Ask an assistant to watch one group for three minutes and mark every period when athletes wait without a useful role.
- Split the longest line into pairs or smaller stations. Give waiting partners a specific job, such as showing a passing target or tracking attempts.
- Repeat the observation after the change. Keep the setup that creates more purposeful turns without crowding players or reducing supervision.
What It Can Look Like
Eight players queue for one layup. Two supervised baskets and partner passing let everyone rehearse a useful part of the movement.
Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.
Take it with you: Improve the structure before asking athletes to show more enthusiasm.
