Explain Playing Roles Before Game Day

Unclear roles can leave athletes guessing whether they belong. Explain the program's approach to participation and development before competition creates pressure. Keep promises aligned with your actual policy, and give each athlete a way to discuss their learning.

When to use it

Use at the start of a season or before a new competition format.

Put It into Practice

  1. Share the participation policy in plain language with athletes and caregivers. Explain how decisions are made, what may change and whom to contact with questions.
  2. Discuss individual roles using actions the athlete can practice. Avoid permanent labels such as 'just a defender' or guarantees about outcomes you cannot control.
  3. Revisit roles after a defined period. Ask what the athlete understands, identify learning opportunities and check that your actual decisions match the policy you communicated.

What It Can Look Like

A coach explains rotation principles before the tournament and gives an athlete a specific passing decision to practice during their court time.

Take it with you: Clarity should give athletes a path to learn, not a fixed label.
