Keep a Useful Coaching Notebook

A notebook is most valuable when it helps you make a different decision next time. Record a few observations rather than every event in the session. Keep sensitive participant information in the program's approved system, not in an informal journal.

When to use it

Use immediately after practice while the key moments are still clear.

Put It into Practice

  1. Create three short headings: what athletes did, what I changed and what I will try next. Write observations that another coach could recognise rather than broad judgments.
  2. Choose one question for the next session, such as whether shorter rounds increase participation. Keep it within something you can observe without intrusive tracking.
  3. At the next practice, check that question and add the result. Periodically remove notes that no longer serve a purpose according to the program's information practices.

What It Can Look Like

The coach notes that demonstrations beside the noisy entrance were hard to hear and plans a quieter gathering point.

Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.

Take it with you: Write enough to improve your next decision, not to document every moment.
