Make Your Correction Small Enough to Try
An athlete cannot usually apply five technical corrections in the next repetition. Choose the adjustment that matters most for the present task. A small correction is useful when it creates an immediate chance to notice a difference.
When to use it
Use when you catch yourself explaining several things after every attempt.
Put It into Practice
- Observe more than one attempt and choose a single action linked to the task's purpose. Separate what you saw from what you assumed about effort.
- State the action in plain words, then invite the athlete to try again. Avoid adding another correction while they are preparing the repetition.
- After two or three attempts, ask what felt different and describe what you observed. Keep, change or remove the cue based on that response.
What It Can Look Like
For a rushed pass, the coach first asks the athlete to find a clear target instead of correcting feet, elbows and speed together.
