Model Respectful Disagreement with Officials
Athletes watch how coaches respond when a call goes against them. You can seek clarification while keeping the focus on participation and the next play. Prepare your response before the game creates a difficult moment.
When to use it
Use during competition and when discussing team sideline standards.
Put It into Practice
- Review the competition's permitted way to ask an official a question. Agree with your staff who will speak and keep other adults focused on the athletes.
- Use a brief, factual question at an appropriate stoppage. Avoid sarcasm, personal remarks or encouraging the group to join a complaint.
- Return attention to the next controllable action. If a concern needs formal follow-up, use the organiser's process after the game and explain that approach to the team.
What It Can Look Like
After asking for clarification, the coach brings the team back to its defensive assignment instead of continuing the argument from the bench.

Take it with you: Respectful conduct is a skill athletes learn from adult examples.
