Respond to a Playing-Time Question Calmly

Questions about playing time can carry disappointment and confusion. A planned conversation helps you listen while staying grounded in the program's participation policy. Avoid debating individual decisions in the heat of a game or discussing other athletes.

When to use it

Use when an athlete or caregiver requests clarification about participation.

Put It into Practice

  1. Arrange an appropriate time and include the athlete's voice in a way that fits their age and the program's communication rules. Ask what they understand and what concerns them.
  2. Explain the applicable policy and the specific decisions you can discuss. Acknowledge any mismatch between your communication and your actions without defending every moment of the game.
  3. Agree on a clear next step, such as a role review or a development opportunity, and set a follow-up point. Do not promise court time you cannot guarantee.

What It Can Look Like

The coach reviews the rotation policy, listens to the athlete's concern and arranges a check-in after the next practice block.
