Review a Game Without Replaying Every Mistake

A post-game review can become a long list of everything that went wrong. Choose a small number of moments that help the next practice. Athletes should leave knowing what to work on, not carrying a catalogue of errors.

When to use it

Use after competition, once the group is ready for a calm discussion.

Put It into Practice

  1. Select one effective team action and one learning question. Use observable examples and avoid making a single athlete's error stand for the whole game.
  2. Invite athletes to describe what they saw before adding your interpretation. Separate decisions from outcomes: a sensible choice can still end in a missed shot.
  3. Choose one practice task that responds to the discussion. Tell athletes when they will revisit it, and end the review before attention turns into fatigue or blame.

What It Can Look Like

Rather than reviewing every turnover, the team notices difficulty finding an outlet and plans a small-sided pressure-release activity.

Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.

Take it with you: A review earns its time by improving the next learning opportunity.
