Track Decisions as Well as Makes

A made shot does not tell the whole story of a possession. Help athletes notice the decisions that created or limited an opportunity. Keep the measure narrow so observation supports learning instead of becoming another ranking system.

When to use it

Use when athletes judge every attempt only by whether the ball went in.

Put It into Practice

  1. Choose one decision to observe, such as recognising an open teammate or taking a balanced shot with space. Describe it before the game begins.
  2. Ask an assistant or rotating observer to tally examples during a short round. Keep the notes about the task rather than publishing individual scores for comparison.
  3. Discuss one useful decision and replay a similar situation. Ask athletes what information they used, then decide whether the practice condition should stay or change.

What It Can Look Like

An athlete passes out of pressure to an open teammate. The coach recognises the read without pretending the eventual missed shot was a success.

Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.

Take it with you: Measure the part of learning you want athletes to notice.
