Turn a Missed Game into a Useful Return

An athlete returning after an absence may need information more than a reminder that they missed something. Provide a clear route back into the group. Keep reasons for absence private and avoid making attendance assumptions about a family's commitment.

When to use it

Use after an athlete misses one or more sessions for any reason.

Put It into Practice

  1. Welcome the athlete and share the one or two team changes they need today. Ask whether there is anything practical the coaching team should know through the appropriate channel.
  2. Offer a partner demonstration or a brief recap before the new activity. If the absence involved injury or illness, follow the program's established participation and clearance process.
  3. Check understanding during the session and name the next opportunity to practice. Do not assign punitive extra work to make up for missed time.

What It Can Look Like

An athlete who missed a new inbound routine walks through it with a teammate rather than learning it under game pressure.
