Welcome a First-Time Athlete into an Established Group
Joining a team with shared jokes and familiar routines can feel harder than learning the drills. Prepare the group to make entry easier. Give the newcomer useful information and choices without making them the centre of a long introduction.
When to use it
Use when an athlete joins midway through a program.
Put It into Practice
- Before the session, explain the arrival point, what to bring and who will greet them. Ask privately whether any practical adjustment would help them participate.
- Introduce a willing buddy for the first activity and explain the task to both athletes. Rotate partners later so the newcomer meets more than one person.
- Check in near the end with a specific question about the session. Invite feedback about anything confusing and tell them what will happen at the next practice.
What It Can Look Like
A new athlete learns the water location, stop signal and partner rotation before joining the first game.
