Use a Private Readiness Check
Athletes arrive carrying school, travel and family experiences a coach may not see. A readiness check can guide today's participation without asking for public personal disclosures. It is a coaching conversation, not an assessment of mental health.
When to use it
Use at arrival when you need to understand how athletes want to approach the session.
Put It into Practice
- Offer a simple private choice: ready to start, need a slower entry or would like to speak with an adult. Explain who sees the response and how you will follow up.
- Respond with practical options within the program, such as observing the first demonstration or joining a lower-pressure opening activity. Do not demand an explanation for every choice.
- Check back during the session and use established support or safeguarding procedures if a concern needs more help. Never promise secrecy around a safety concern.
What It Can Look Like
An athlete chooses a slower entry after a long journey, then joins the main activity after a brief check-in.
Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.
Take it with you: Use readiness information to offer support, not to label athletes.
