Ask About Access Needs Privately

Families should be able to discuss participation needs without explaining a child's life to the whole team. Focus on what helps the athlete take part comfortably and safely.

When to use it

Use this before a new program or when the current setup creates a barrier.

Put It into Practice

  1. Ask the athlete what they want adults to know and identify practical supports, such as clear instructions, a quieter arrival or an accessible entrance.
  2. Contact the designated program lead privately and ask how requests are handled, who needs the information and how it will be protected.
  3. Agree on an initial adjustment and a check-in date; involve the athlete in reviewing whether it helps without requiring them to educate the group.

What It Can Look Like

A family asks for the session outline in advance and a consistent meeting point; the coach shares the arrangement only with staff responsible for delivering it.

Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.

Take it with you: Share the minimum useful information and treat an access conversation as collaborative planning rather than a public explanation of a child.
