Attend a Tryout with a Useful Plan
A tryout day becomes more manageable when the family separates logistics from outcomes. Prepare what you can without treating selection as a verdict on the athlete.
When to use it
Use this before an assessment session or a new-team tryout.
Put It into Practice
- Confirm the time, venue, equipment, eligibility and selection communication process from the organizer; write unanswered questions down instead of guessing from other families.
- Ask the athlete to choose one controllable action for the session, such as listening to instructions, and agree what support they want from you.
- Plan transport and the rest of the day regardless of the result; leave space before discussing performance and avoid promises about selection.
What It Can Look Like
An athlete chooses to ask when a drill is unclear, while the parent handles parking and pickup; the family keeps dinner plans unchanged after the tryout.
Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.
Take it with you: Preparation supports participation, while the selection decision remains something neither a parent nor an athlete can fully control.
