Help a Young Volunteer Set Boundaries
Volunteering can give athletes a meaningful way to contribute, provided the role fits their age and remains supported by adults. Enthusiasm does not remove the need for boundaries.
When to use it
Use this when your athlete is invited to help at a clinic, event or younger group's session.
Put It into Practice
- Ask for the specific tasks, time commitment, supervising adult and process for asking questions; clarify which duties are outside a young volunteer's role.
- Help your athlete choose what they are comfortable trying and rehearse how to decline an extra task or request help during the event.
- Check afterward whether the actual role matched the agreement, and raise any concern with the organizer rather than expecting the athlete to manage it alone.
What It Can Look Like
A teen helps set out cones and demonstrate a familiar activity while an adult retains responsibility for supervision, discipline and participant care.

Take it with you: Youth leadership should include meaningful choice and learning, with adult accountability for safeguarding and the limits of the role.
