Recognize When Extra Help Is Wanted

Notice when an athlete wants more support without trying to diagnose a problem. Ask what they are experiencing and who they would feel comfortable involving.

When to use it

Use this when difficulties are persisting, affecting daily life or feeling bigger than ordinary family problem-solving.

Put It into Practice

  1. Describe changes you have noticed without labels, invite the athlete's perspective and listen without promising that one conversation will settle everything.
  2. Ask whether they would like help contacting a trusted adult or appropriate qualified professional; explain what information needs sharing and involve them where possible.
  3. Agree on a concrete next step and keep checking in; if there is an immediate safety concern, contact appropriate emergency or urgent support rather than waiting.

What It Can Look Like

A caregiver notices repeated distress around participation and helps the athlete arrange a conversation with an appropriate support person rather than calling it a motivation problem.

Take it with you: The family can listen, connect and follow through without diagnosing or minimizing the concern.
