Repair a Sideline Mistake
If you shouted, criticized or embarrassed someone, a direct repair matters more than a long explanation. Take responsibility without asking your athlete to reassure you.
When to use it
Use this after your own behaviour affected a child, coach, official or another spectator.
Put It into Practice
- Wait until you can speak calmly, then name what you did and its effect without adding excuses about the score or another adult.
- Apologize to the affected person through an appropriate channel; if a child was involved, follow program guidance and include their caregiver as appropriate.
- State a specific change for the next event and follow through; ask the program about any additional steps required by its conduct process.
What It Can Look Like
A parent says, “I shouted at the official and made the sideline uncomfortable. I will stop giving running commentary and step away if I cannot stay respectful.”
Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.
Take it with you: Repair is an adult responsibility; your child should not have to defend, forgive immediately or mediate your behaviour.
