Set a Sideline Role for Yourself
Decide how you want to contribute before the emotional moments arrive. A clear spectator role helps you support the group without adding competing instructions from the stands.
When to use it
Use this before a close game or whenever you notice yourself coaching loudly from the sideline.
Put It into Practice
- Choose two behaviours you will use, such as applauding teamwork and respecting officials; avoid instructions that compete with the coach's cues.
- Agree with another caregiver on a discreet reminder if either person becomes overly involved, without turning it into public correction.
- After the game, review your own behaviour privately and identify one adjustment; keep your athlete out of managing your emotions.
What It Can Look Like
A parent replaces shouted positioning instructions with encouragement for both teams and asks a friend for a quiet reminder when the score gets tense.
Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.
Take it with you: Your most useful sideline contribution is a steady environment in which young people can play and adults remain responsible for themselves.
