Support an Athlete Who Was Not Selected
A selection decision can hurt without defining a young person's value or future. Help your athlete separate the disappointment from the choices they still control.
When to use it
Use this after a tryout, roster decision or invitation that did not go the way your athlete hoped.
Put It into Practice
- Allow disappointment without rushing into comparisons, explanations or a promise that selectors were wrong; ask whether they want company or space.
- When they are ready, help them request one specific development point through the program's normal feedback process, if feedback is offered.
- Identify two realistic next opportunities and let the athlete choose whether to explore either; keep timelines manageable rather than scheduling an immediate comeback campaign.
What It Can Look Like
After missing a travel roster, an athlete chooses a local skills group and a later review date instead of adding several extra sessions that week.
Your notes stay on this page. They are not saved or sent. Print before leaving to keep a copy.
Take it with you: Keep belonging, learning and choice available while the athlete decides what this setback means for their next step.
